Or not

 - by Lisa Sinclair

3 and a half hours of working to solve this idiotic problem with no respite.

The solution from yesterday has turned out not to actually work. So I still have to play a DVD using VLC and THEN play it using Frontrow (if I want the additional things the apple remote can do, such as pause and stop).

The alternative is to flash the DVD drive or suck it up. To flash the DVD drive I have to DOWNGRADE (I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m seriously considering this option) to 10.4, then run the firmware updater.

It would appear the whole problem is occurring because I had the audacity to purchase DVDs from the US (simply because they were unavailable here in Australia). With US region coding the DVDs won’t play properly (in the first instance) with Frontrow which has — until this point — been quite a reliable playback system.

I’ve tried several alternatives to Frontrow to see if it was just the software, including XBMC, Boxee and Plex. XBMC doesn’t play DVDs properly, PLEX doesn’t even attempt to play DVDs and Boxee had the same problems Frontrow had. I tried a couple of other media-centre applications, and have considered setting up the mac mini as a mythTV box (but would need help setting up the back-end; ironically I wouldn’t use the back-end for recording TV as I don’t watch it).

All this hassle JUST TO WATCH A DVD I HAVE ACTUALLY BOUGHT WITH MONEY!!! WHY AM I BEING PUNISHED FOR BUYING A DVD?!

It’s turning into a rant. I should go to bed. Fuck it.

Frontrow extended! Muahahaha

Here’s a thing — I’ve got a nice home video system at home. The core is a Mac Mini (one of the original intel ones I think) with a 20 inch mac screen, and Harmon Kardon soundsticks speaker system plugged in.
On the mac mini, I run Frontrow. I wanted a system which was just a point and click with the mac remote — 5 buttons of ultimate power.

For my little loungeroom, it’s a nice, simple and easy to use system.
Except some DVDs wouldn’t run on it. Or rather, they wouldn’t run on Frontrow. They WOULD run on VLC.
Except now they will. Thanks to a bit of software called DVD Assist which helps Frontrow see Video-TS folders which is where, on a DVD, the video is actually located.

Any video with foxes, tigers, rabbits and other wild animals on bicycles gets my vote.

Sitting on my meditation cushion in the loungeroom writing this… On my iPhone!

And on breaking news, I discovered that if I eat properly, I don’t feel crappy…

I find rhyming slang and alternative terms for things amusing.

Sometimes I hear wrong and there’s a term going around my head that’s not quite right, but makes me giggle nonetheless.

The latest is one from the king of sardonic wit, Yahtzee  Crosshaw of Zero Punctuation Reviews.

Lamp them one: the art of whacking someone in an irritated fashion, potentially over the head.

As stated, I could have heard it wrong; he’s got an accent you could use to butter toast (as opposed to one you can cut with a knife).

And as I sit here, listening to Barry Adamson‘s Stranger on The Sofa album, I wonder first if I’ll have enough money to get tickets to his Melbourne concert, and then exactly why I’m still awake. It’s after bloody midnight!
