Theorising hay fever

I have hay fever today, entirely self-inflicted. By now I should have stopped putting my fingers in my eyes after patting a cat.

Eating breakfast at agent 86 in collingwood, it occurred to me that after eating the hay fever goes away, albeit temporarily. This led me to a theory: the food adds fuel to the body which is otherwise consuming energy at a vastly accelerated rate from reacting to the allergen. By adding fuel to the depleted body, things feel better and the symptoms go away while the food energy is consumed. The symptoms return when this extra energy is depleted.

So, my question is this: how much energy is consumed by an allergic reaction like hay fever?
